At Omni, we hold that effective communication is the key to solving most, if not all, of our problems, fostering a more informed and harmonious society. Omni Ethiopia will recently launch its flagship project- “Empowered Media-Informed Communities” in partnerships with Deutsche Welle Akademia (DWA) with funding from GIZ. The project aims to empower community radio stations in Ethiopia play a critical supportive role in local governance affairs.
Project Description Ethiopia has faced numerous challenges due to unresolved political and economic disputes, impacting the media landscape and reliable information flow. The capital primarily relies on state-funded media, while regions outside struggle with limited information from under-resourced Community Radios (CR). Of the 55 licensed CRs, only about 30 are operational, many affected by political conflicts. This leaves a significant portion of the multilingual Ethiopian population underserved in terms of information access and freedom of expression. Omni Ethiopia's "Empowered Media - Informed Communities" project aims to enhance the capacity of selected CRs, improving their professional skills and role in governance processes.
